Thanks a lot for this post, Chris. This is certainly new information for me, and I assume for most Mulkey researchers interested in the Rev. Philip Mulkey line. When compiling a genealogy for my line last year, I consulted all the sources I could find, and while several discussed his alleged misbehavior, none ever provided a clear answer to the question of what he actually did.Frankly, this information in comforting to me (as a descendant) in that it is comparatively tame by today's standards! For other readers not familiar with the source, Rev. Oliver Hart was the pastor of the Charleston Baptist congregation (1750-1780) and Rev. James Manning was a founder and first president of Brown University (1765-1791).As a footnote, I appreciate your making the effort to post this source information.I use the surname forums a lot and value them highly, but have long been disappointed by the relative rarity of this sort of information. Most folks just post queries or very limited "tombstone" information.
