Hi Jonathan,
I just came across you query about Robert W. Murdock.I have been working on the Murdocks for over 40 years and am glad to say I have some good news for you.I am at home right now but tomorrow I will be back at my office so I can look closely at my database. But your Robert W. Murdock was born in Franklin Co., GA to Thomas Hamilton Murdock (b. 1797 in Newberry Co., SC) and his wife, Mary, last name unknown.Thomas moved his family to Cobb Co., GA, living NE of Marietta from about 1845 to about 1855, give a take a year or two.He moved to Duck Springs which was then in Dekalb Co., AL and died in Etowah Co., AL in 1873.Thomas H. and Mary are both buried in the Kyuka Cemetery in Northern Etowah County.
Thomas Hamilton was the son of Revolutionary War Veteran, William Murdock, who was born in 1759 in or near Killyleah in County Down, Northern Ireland. His family came to what is now Newberry Co., SC around 1768 and William married in Newberry County some years after the war to Mary Ruble, daughter of Peter Ruble. They had nine known children. The Murdocks were devout Presbyterians when they came over but a couple of generations later they were pretty much all Baptist or Methodist.Thomas Hamilton's oldest brother was Rev. David Murdock, a Methodist minister. But Thomas Hamilton was an active Baptist.
William Murdock (b. 1759 in Ireland) was one of two sons of Hamilton and Mary Cleland Murdock. They both grew up in the Killyleagh Presbyterian Church in County Down and were married there. Some years after they migrated to SC, Mary died and Hamilton remarried to a lady named Jean.
Hamilton Murdock got his given name from his mother.
He was the son of William and Martha Hamilton Murdock, although they spelled the name Murdogh back then. And in the first fifty years in the U.S. they spelled it Murdoch most of the time.Hamilton's grandparents were also married in the Killyleagh church. They were William Murdogh and Jennet Murchland who were married around 1698.
Therefore, I have suspected that the older William was born around 1675 while the baptism of his son, William, was in the year, 1700.
Back to your Robert W., I believe his mother had died by 1870 and he and his bride had gone to live with his oldest sister, Hannah.Hannah was the third child but the oldest daughter of Thomas Hamilton and Mary. She first married Thomas Banister, Colonel of the Cobb Co., GA militia and they later moved to AL when Thomas Hamilton and Mary moved there. Then after Thomas Banister died during the Civil War (and he had enlisted even though he was the same age as Gen. Robt. E. Lee), Hannah was remarried to John Lancaster. She later moved to Texas and died there.
I have tried to keep this simple enough, but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask them.
I descend from John Banister, younger brother of Thomas Banister, who married Mary Murdock, daughter of a
William Murdock who was a first cousin to Thomas Hamilton Murdock. My William's father was James Murdock, the younger brother to your William, the Revolutionary War Vet.
My James was about two years old when they came over from Northern Ireland. He and his wife had about 14 children.
My William, his oldest son, was born in 1794 in Newberry Co., SC, later moved with his parents to Abbeville Co., SC
and moved again in 1845 to Cobb County, GA, my home county.
Best regards,R. L. GuffinTuscaloosa, AL
