Swiss History of the Murff/Murph families
Swiss documents reveal that our family lineage goes back to the villages of Illnau and Lindau, Zurich Canton in the year 1331. Our present names were derived from the Christian names of MOROLF AND MOROFF. Hans Morolf from Illnau was known to have lived in the Einsiedeln Monastery in about 1500. A Konrad MOROFF lived in 1504 in Illnau.
These villages are located a short distance north of Zurich. In about 1550 Felix Morof from Illnau and Barthli Morof from Nurendorf held the office of Mayor of Zurich. In 1560 Thomann Moroff of Lindau became the Mayor of Zurich.
This information is available in the library ofSwiss Archives in Zurich.
The earliest arrival of Morfs in the U.S. was in December 1749 when five MORF men with wives arrived on the ship Greenwich with a captain named Randolph.
