I am sure this email will ruffle some feathers, but here it goes.I hope it gives answers or contributes to dialog.
Lord John Murray, Marquess of Atholl,(2 May 1631-6 May 1703) Knight of the Thistle, Sheriff of Fife, was married to Lady Amelia Ann Sophia Stanley, of Derby on 5 May 1659.
He evidently was a bit of a paramore. In 1658, he fathered a child by a woman named Janet Mananachie, named James Murray(1658-died about 1680-1690 of smallpox) apprentised as a Lawyer in Edinburgh.
By Lady Amelia Stanley, Lord John sired 12 legitimate children.I could give you the names or just look them up on the internet.
Next our Scottish play boy hooked up with Lady Jane MacLean and between 1665-1668, he fathered 4 boys. I call them,
James Murray of Baltimore County, Maryland (1665-1704)
William Murray, of Perthshire, Scotland (1666-?), who married Mary Van.Whos son came to Maryland, a William Van Murray.
George Murray, of Henrico County, Va. (1668-1760, and his twin,
John Murray, of Swatara, Pennsylvania(1668-1732).
His Grace, Lord John then was not finished. He hitched up with one of Lady Amelia's ladies, a certain Catherine Ann Richards(1640-?).By her, he had twins born, a still born boy, and a girl, Jane Murray (1676-?)
Now most of this is reflective research over the years. So I would call this a working hypotesis.I know from some histories that many parts of this are true.
Let us face the fact, that people are basically sexy. And night time in Scotland is very cold and dark.
