Bessie (Mushrush) Freeman > IL > AR > CA
Bessie (Mushrush) Freeman was born September 10, 1897, in Illinois, and died September 17, 1986, Torrance, Los Angeles County, California (father's surname Mushrush, mother's maiden name Campbell).
Bessie married George Heber Freeman, October 2, 1919, in Hunles, Woodruff County, Arkansas. He was born January 26, 1898, and died January 17, 1975, Torrance, Los Angeles County, California.
Bessie and George lived in Little Rock, Arkansas, from about 1928 to past 1951, and lived at various addresses. They had two known children, George H. and Ernest M.
From about 1930-31 to about 1934, they lived at 317 Rosetta Street during which time Bessie wrote a series of 15 articles for the Arkansas Gazette about quilts and quiltmaking. Each one-column article was illustrated with a photograph of a quilt discussed in the text. The quilts she pictured were vintage, not newly made.
Did Bessie collect quilts? Did she make quilts? Or did the quilts she illustrated belong to friends and neighbors?
For more details and ten of the quilts she illustrated, see
I would like to correspond with anyone familiar with Bessie's activities in Little Rock during the 1930s particularly.
