Re: John Nance Barber
I have got it narrowed down to two individuals in Arkansas. The first and the lead I am following the closest is an Edward W and Sarah Barber, living in the Jenny Lind area of Franklin County in 1860.Edward is a grocer and they have a one year old John Barber. Now most of my info I received from the Barbers states that John was born in 1855.However, in two consecutive censuses, John had different years of birth.
My main reason for following this lead is that in future censuses, John sticks to stating that his father was born in Tennessee and his mother in Kentucky.Edward was born in Tennessee and his wife was born in Kentucky.I am unable to find them in the 1870 census, nor can I get any information on the grocery store records.
The second lead is a James G Barber, married to a Caroline or Carolina. They have a 5 year old John Barber in 1860.However, James states that he was born in Kentucky. And Caroline was born in Kentucky.I found a William M Nance with a daughter Caroline in Kentucky in the 1850 census, and her age is reasonable, but can not go further.
In August of 1870, James G Barber died from fever. The family was then living in Jefferson Twnship, Desha County, Arkansas. There was a daughter Mary and another son Henry, living with John and mother.
Have you heard of any of this?
I am not able to be satisfied with the Lyman Barber choice. They were all from Illinois and came to Arkansas.I think John might have known where his parents were born.
Please let me know if there is any of this that might make sense or if you have heard of any more info on our elusive John Nance!
