Origin of name
My surname is denNARD, researching my english ancestors I found many varients- denyard, dengard, downard, dinnard, denard, dewnard etc etc.
The bad news or good news is that we are all romanies(english gypsies) and i have found other romany families with surnames ending in nard( I hope you understand the difference between gypsies and romanies).
naturally i was curious whether nard was significant and I found the following:
THE ROMA were a race of people living in Northern India up to 10th Century, Each clan was called a Dom and each clan had their own main occupation. Pressure from the South forced emigration of the more skilled clans to a place in the far north of india called NARD. around the 11 th century some of these doms from Nard made the epic trek to Europe and became known as gypsies. There are dinards, dinnardis, denards, nards, and nardis etc throughout europe and this perhaps explains why.
It is interesting to note that, while European romanies differ greatly in charecteristics etc their basic language can be traced back to Nard as a common theme.
Romanies were and are adept at name changes and it is reasonable to think that while my family became known as dom from nard(dennard) others would have just said nard.
I have had great discussion with american 'cousins' who liked to beeive they were french hugonout emigres but this does not hold water.
Hope this is of interest
ps columbus had three romanies with him on his first visit to America!!!
