AUGUSTA -- Katherine N. Towle, 86, of Gray Birch Drive, and formerly of Cedar Court, died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 5, 2005, at her residence.
She was born in Winthrop on July 27, 1918, a daughter of the late Charles and Annie (Rzesutek) Nedza.
Mrs. Towle was a graduate of Winthrop High School, class of 1936, where she played varsity basketball. Being athletic and competitive in nature, she and a small group of friends would swim the length of Maranacook Lake in Winthrop.
She was a homemaker for most of her life, but also worked for several years at the Augusta Mental Health Institute.
Mrs. Towle, a devout Catholic, was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church for more than 60 years and was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.
She was especially humble, extremely generous, and very devoted to her family and friends while being kind to and well-liked by neighbors. She had a competitive spirit and enjoyed watching and playing trivia games, including "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune" with the other residents at Gray Birch.
Mrs. Towle was an avid sports fan. Her favorite teams were the Boston Celtics, Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots and Notre Dame; her favorite professional stars were Larry Bird, Ted Williams, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal.
Katherine, proud of her Polish heritage, often reminisced of her parents' exodus from Europe and immigration to America through Ellis Island. This historic thread influenced her patriotic values.
Mrs. Towle was predeceased by her husband, Gerald A. Towle; a brother, John; and two sisters, Mary and Sofia.
She is survived by a son, Dennis G. Towle and his wife, Joan, of Augusta; a daughter, Geraldine Hall and her husband, Richard, of Tolland, Conn.; a sister, Tekla Kowalczyk of Lodz, Poland; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Gary Towle and his wife, Simone, and son Christopher of Bedford, Nova Scotia, Shawn Towle of Orlando, Fla., his son, Jeremie Towle, and his wife, Nikki, of Norfolk, Va., Jessica Towle of Ft. Myers, Fla., Jasmine Bryars of Cassleberry, Fla., Jennifer Hall of South Windsor, Conn., and Stephen Hall of Vernon, Conn.; a special niece, Elizabeth Chadwick of Augusta; a nephew, Bill Beaulieu and his wife, Coreen, and their daughter, Merissa, of North Monmouth; a niece, Joan Doyle and her husband, William, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; as well as many friends, especially Dick and Carole St. Amand and family, Charles and Ellie McGillicuddy and family, Earle and Leona Eldridge, and Phil Judd. Katherine also had great respect for and appreciation of Dennis Arbour, who served her Holy Communion at Gray Birch.
The Towle family would like to thank the entire staff at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation & Nursing Care at Gray Birch for the exceptional assistance they gave Katherine since she was placed in their care in 1998.
Visiting hours are 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Manchester.
