I am interested in the learning more about Nicolaus Adam Becker's emmigration from Germany to Illinois in 1847, and I have to think that his being in America would have had an impact on my Simon Neufeld's (1824-1881) decision to come to America in c.1852.I make my Simon to be 1st cousin, once removed from your Nicolaus (Simon's father would have been Nicolaus' "pure" first cousin).
Heretofore, I had known that Simon had a sister (Anna Maria Neufeld, b: 1821) living in New Orleans, and that she made the journey across the ocean PRIOR TO Simon's undertaking the voyage. In fact, she married at New Orleans in c.1848 (I think), before Simon came across. This places Anna Maria and Nicolas in America at about the same time.Might we speculate that they came together, and that Anna Maria continued southward to New Orleans??(This hypothesis is written "in pencil", and then, only very, very lightly!).
In any case, there are dynamics at play here which are very interesting.
Did Nicolas settle in a German community in Illinois? Were the other Germans from the same region of Germany?Let me know.
