There are four Stephens from the Overton county area in the early 1800's.The elder Stephen came in from somewhere, to Overton County (possibly from Georgia after a land lottery). There is a story circulating that he and his wife Sarah came from Scotland or Finland, but they had a son, Thomas (my gggrandfather) who had been born in North Carolina around 1797. The second Stephen, Thomas' brother) was born on a ship coming into Savannah in 1802. It doesn't make sense that they were in Scotland before that.
Stephen Junior eventually went to Arkansas and was buried there. We have copies of his military discharge.
The third Stephen of that area was born somewhere in Overton County around 1823. He is my great-grandfather, and is the son of Thomas. He is listed in the 1840 census, and went to Texas about 1851, because his in-laws had land there. He is buried in Bastrop County,Texas.
The fourth Stephen is a bit of a mystery. He appears in other counties,in the census of 1840 and 1850.We think he may be the son of Elijah.Possibly a cousin. We're not sure of the relationship. His name was possibly Stephen Valentine.
We think that Stephen Sr.and Sarah had five boys: Thomas, Stephen Jr., Elijah, William, and Joseph.Joseph went to Chicago and was married to an Allred. William possibly went to Wisconsin. We believe that Elijah stayed in Tennessee. We haven't been able to document much of this. There is the census, and family stories. If you can find any of this in records, please let us know.
