Hi, yes I am also researching Brittons and have alot of information on them.I can say with fair certainty that I believe there were 2 brothers in Monmouth county early. Some researchers feel that John came from Watertown Mass, but I am not so certain and I will read to you why after this. The Monmouth Associators in a book by BeekmanAuthor James steen July 1780 included are James Nivison sr and John Nivison Jr also John Nivison son of William. Also in the militia records stated John Nivison Sr and John Jr and John Nivison Jr son of William.I believe this William and John left the area. There has been absolutely no information that I have ever come across to include them in this family.John Nivison Sr is mentioned several places and so is John Jr.John Nivison who married Hannah Beers 11 Jun 1747 had the folloring children:
1.John b 21 Nov 1756 Middletown married Sarah Tyse (Tice)
2.Hannah born 21 Jan 1758 Middletown married George Taylor 26 May 1778
3.Eleanor(Ellen) born Feb 1762 married James Taylor (brother to George)
4. Nathaniel 8 Feb 1760 Married Elizabeth Harvey and moved with his children to New York State.
5. William born 1764 (therefore he is not the William mentioned in the rev war.) married Sarah Postey 28 July 1793
6. James born 1766? married Lucy Lawlor 22 Jan 1818
7. Thomas born ca 1760 married Pheobe Owen (dau of David Owen Sr) 26 March 1786
8. Mary born ca 1760 married Jacob Janse 1 Feb 1778 United Dutch church of Freehold, Monmouth County, records.
There is no proof of some of these children, however due to dates and entries in deeds, willsetc you can put them together.I know John Sr was in Monmouth as early as 8 May 1744 when he received land from William Leland and his wife. This relationship is unknown.
Back to the other researchers and the connection to Mass.
As per genealogy dictionary first settler of new England by James Savage Vol III 1965.
Nevinson, John watertown, Mass 1670 came a 2 years before from East Horsley in county Surrey son of rev. Roger Nevinson by wife elizabeth married probably in England had son John, sarah born 22 July 1672, Eliz 22 Oct 1675, ann 2 Oct 1678, William 26 Jun 1681 and Mary who was the oldest child born in england and died 24 Jan 1695.Soon after the widow married william Bond. Both sons died unmarried the elder on 23 Feb 1692 the younger 1711, and so the name fail.Sarah married 29 Oc 1713 Nathanile Stearns and next Sameuel Livermore. elizabeth md 24 apr 1694 Samuel Hastings, ann md 30 Aug 1716 joshua Grant and mary md Samuel hastings soon after early death of his sister his first wife.
Let me know what information you need for the Britton line. Barbara
