Lary,
Gene Noce was my father. Actually, he was christened Louis Gene but preferred the reverse and was known as Gene Louis.I can remember stories he told about growing up in Kitzmiller. One vacation he took the family on a tour.I was young and the thrill of seeing the mountains and mines was short lived and soon became loved.
You are correct my grandparents did come through Ellis Island sometime during the 1890's. They were previously married in Calabria but I can remember them talk about their origins and I think they were from other parts of Italy. There is a town in the North East sector called " Noce" It was not unusual for immigrants to take the name of a town. Somehow they settled in Kitzmiller which I was also under the imprssion that it was part of west Virginia.Later they bought a small single family house on Ave A in Bayonne. They added a room and remolded. When my parents married, they relocated to a small farm in Lakewood, NJ. and my parents took over the house in Bayonne. The house where I spent the first twenty plus years of my life.My mother just celebrated ( April 20th) her 84th birthday and still lives there. As a family my father would take us to visit grandma and grandpa just about every Sunday. My grandmother would make a sauce that you would kill for.She used all fresh ingedients. In 1957 my grandfathers health was failing.they sold the farm and moved back to Bayonne. He passed away in May of that year. Two months later my father was hospitalized for a routine operation ( Gall stones) A complication set in and he could not survive the subsequent emerging surgies. He was buried in July of 57, i was 13 years old.
My father never had a formal education.his dream was for me to go to college. He had the ability to adopt the better qualities of the people around him.He took a job in Western Electric in South Kearney, NJ.during the war Western Electric was declared a defense plant. He worked his way from the assembly lines to supervisor. He had a charisma and spaeking ability that was amazing. He was president of the Holy Name Society of the Assumption Church. He was president of the Veritas Club which was a social/political organization. He was very popular in the work place.I can remember dinner parties with department heads and Sr. Staff Engineers that would continue to the early morning hours.I started my career in Western Electric. I can remember people seeking me about just to shake my hand and tell me how much he was missed. He was an avid bowler and once hit a very frustrating299.My mother still has his jacket with the ABC patch on it.I can remember going into a closet and seeing a half dozen or so bowling shirts with various team logos. All these activities were a sore point with my mother. They took him away from the home maybe a little more than was considered reasonable.I have a brother and a sister.we were all named in the European tradition. I am the oldest and named after my grandfather, my sister Kathy is named after my mothers mother and my brother is named after my Father ( Gene Louis) My mother is Polish, grew up in Jersey City, NJ and met my father while also working @ Western Electric. They were married in 1942, I was born in 1944.It was not easy for my mother to be accepted by my fathers family-being non-Italian.As time went on things fell together.
My childhood memories are all pleasant.I didnt want for much.I remember one Christmas, my father gave me a Daisy air rifle.I was ten years old.My mother almost had a heart attack. So we all had to make an agreement that we would only use the gun on the farm when we visited grandma and grandpa.
I hope this gives you some insight as to the man my Father was.It has been a long time since I reflected on those days. Thank you for your interest.
Sincerly,
Philip J. Noce, Sr.
