"Nat" originally enlisted in Capt. F.D. Ferguson's company, 6th Virginia Infantry, in Norfolk in April 1861.In July, his company was consolidated with others to make up the 12th Virginia. As a master 'coach maker' in civilian life, he was detailed to construct winter quarters in November. From March until Nov 1862, he was listed as 'sick', eventually ending up in Camp Winder hospital in Richmond, suffering from measles and tuberculosis.
On 15 Dec 1862, he was officially discharged and never fully recovered from these diseases.Nat was described as being 'five feet ten inches high, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair.'
In the 'battle of the crater' at Petersburg on 30 Jul 1864, the 12th VA battle flag sustained more than 75 bullet holes, but the colors never lost.
In 1870, "Nat" married 17-yr old Sarah Virginia ('Jennie') Camp whose brothers founded 'Camp Manufacturing Co,' the forerunner of the modern day Union Camp Corporation of Franklin, VA.
I have pix of Nat, his wife, and their sons, plus a 'wartime' memories of 'Jenny' describing the terror of being shelled by yankee artillery, her brothers who never came home from the war, etc.
