In 1888, the nameof South Scituate MA was changed to Norwell in honor of Henry Norwell of Boston, whose wife was of Scituate ancestry.
Henry Norwellwas a wealthy Boston merchant and benefactor to the small rural town.
Henry and Hannah Norwell,bought a housein South Scitutate in thelate 1800s and used it as their summer estate.
In 1888, a year after Hannah died, town residents voted to adopt the
Norwell name. In return, Henry Norwell agreed to donate $2,500 a year, for
10 years, toward the upkeep of town roads.
Henry Norwell married his second wife, Ellen Jane Lewis, and raised three
children in the house. In 1903, shortly before his death, he sold the property
to the Tuttle family.Itwas purchased in 1996 by the gr grandson of Henry
