Charles Goodspeed Nute was born at Campbelltown, Steuben County, New York, one of nine children. It's believed he then moved to Fleming County, Kentucky where he married Charlotte Evans. She died young at 26 and then Charles married Elizabeth Markwell. He lived for a time with his son Charles William, Sr. in Maitland, Holt County, Missouri after Elizabeth passed away and then he moved to Orlando, Florida where he passed away 25 May 1886 of yellow fever.
His middle name, Goodspeed, came from the man his grandmother married, John Goodspeed.
Charles Goodspeed Nute's father was Obed Nute, Jr. and he (Obed) served in the War of 1812 as a 2nd lieutenant. He died during that conflict and his grave is unknown. His (Obed's) wife Rhoda Stevens applied for and received a widowers war pension of $58.50 in 1813.
Charles Goodspeed Nute's tombstone is still readable in the Greenwood Cemetery in downtown Orlando, Florida.
Charles William Nute, Sr., the son of Charles Goodspeed Nute, came to Maitland and opened a furniture and undertaking business in 1886 in the Jacob Harman building. He also had a furniture store which he later converted to a feed store. He was mayor of Maitland two terms and served as police judge and in other official capacities.
He is buried in the K of P Cemetery in Maitland, Missouri. In 1895, the Knights of Pythias Lodge No. 183, purchased 10 acres of land on the western edge of the City of Maitland. On this land they founded the Maitland Knights of Pythias Cemetery.Sometimes this cemetery is still referred to as the K.P. Cemetery. The local lodge disbanded in the 1920s. After that, a group of concerned citizens from the Maitland area cared for the cemetery. It is now known as The Maitland Cemetery.
