Hello Leslie: Your painting was probably done by Martha Abbott OATHOUT, b. 1 April 1890 at Elkader, Iowa. Her parents were Orlando DeShay and Mary (Ruegnitz) OATHOUT.She married James Albert AYRES on 6 June 1915 in Pomona, California. Her husband died on 10 March 1950.He is buried at the Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California.Martha died 24 February 1975 at Los Angeles, CA and is also buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery.
On a more interesting note - Martha attended the Chicago Art Institute after graduating from Carleton College in Northfield, MN.She was a small-town girl from Luana, Iowa (pop. 100).She excelled at painting and sculpture. In fact, the reason why she chose the Chicago Art Institute was primarily because it taught marble cutting.
She gained a reputation as a sculptress when working for Warner Brothers, MGM, and Paramount Pictures between 1924-1927.She received many awards for her work which include landscape paintings, statuettes and portrait busts.BTW, she sculpted the 'Golden Calf' for the movie "The Ten Commandments" and she did the four-seasons backgrounds for the Judy Garland movie 'Meet Me in St. Louis'.
Her personal remembrances are found in Oothoudt Genealogy Vol IV, along with some photographs of her sculptures. How wonderful that you have one of her paintings! I hope this helps - Shari
