I wonder if you could help me. My great-grandfather was Arthur Oberlander, whom made Burma his home after he joined a mining operation there in 1906. He was born in Muscatine, Iowa in 1881 but his family moved to Murray City, Utah when he was a young child.
His father, John Oberlander, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the 1840s. He was the second child of Peter Oberlander and Wilhemina Bender. He had two daughters, Laura and Martha with his first wife. She had passed away for sometime before he married my great-great grandmother, Isabella Reid. They had five children, one of whom died as a child. His daughters from his first marriage did not travel with him as he moved the rest of his family to Utah.
Also, Peter and Wilhemina both arrived from Germany in Baltimore in 1836, Peter arriving first. They moved to Cincinnati after four or five years in Maryland. They are listed in the 1850 census of Cincinnati as having three children, John being the second child. With them lived another John Oberlander, at that time aged 48 who I believe was Peter’s brother as they were listed together in the passenger list. There was also another John Oberlander, aged about 22 who’s birthplace was, like Peter, John and Wilhemina, in Prussia. Could this have been a nephew or some other relative who arrived later and joined them?
I am hoping that I can connect with someone who may be connected to any of my ancestors in some way.
