Hi Jim, just thought I would give you a little bit of an Idea where my family came from. Yes, my maiden name was Ockenden. I was born in Croydon Surrey, 12th August 1932, and most of my immediate ancesters came from places like Cheam, Ewell, Ashtead, in Surrey. I found branches in Littlehampton,Ashington, Washington,in Sussex. Also in Sussex, but further back in time, Bolney, Albourne, Horsham, Shipley,Cowfold. My family were Artisans, and very prolific, both in the amount of children, and their hardworking life. Appearing in the Town Council Meetings about everything under the sun. They were also the enumerators in the Census returns for over 30 years! like father like son! both James. The elder James wasalso the Postmaster of Cheam. My own grandfather was Owen Bennetts Ockenden, son of Thomas, he was a Monumental Mason, my father, also Owen, did some work for him when times were hard for my dad in the 30's. My father was really an electrical engineer, but his talents in many directions, were wasted because of his social inhibitions. He could do marvellous things in the privacy of his home, but was shy to display the arts he had. He was also a very moody man, (is that a contradiction in terms?) bad tempered at times!. I have two brothers, and had two sisters, the eldest of whom died in 1976, aged 53. Sadly, I have to say that my elder brother is battling Cancer, and is not expected to live, he is in a Hospice now. Their names are Freda, Muriel, Lawrence, and John. I came 4th. I hope you have found this interesting, and may have given you some clues? I hope so! Keep in touch, Kindest regards, Brenda.
