Cherokee Indian & Slave owners - O'Connor, O'Conner etc...
Ok
My great, great, great grand mother was so named Jane Connor Middlebrook by her SLAVE owners. So her birth name was that of Cherokee Indian descent. The slave owners wanted her name to reflect theirs. (the ones who owned her)
She was born in the year 1831 and died in 1935
She is born in Eufalla, AL (with an Unknown Cherokee name) in 1831
She died in 1935 and she buried in Eufalla, AL along with her daughter - Martha Middlebrooks Palmer and son Isaac Abraham Middlebrooks Sr.
Now, Jane's husband who was my great, great, great grand father - Isaac A. Middlebrooks was also a slave and of mixed race (white and black supposedly)
More than likely, his Owner changed his name to reflect his name of Middlebrooks.
Slavery was not abolished until 1865 SO, Jane WAS infact part of the "1936 Trail of Tears" despite what others post on this message board!Jane was very young and I do not have her birth mother or fathers name BUT I am told that he was one of the Main Cherokee Chiefs at that time.
So, now I look for the slave owners who resided in Eufalla, AL in the 1800's.
My search continues....
