Charles Oeser, my grandfather's brother had a grocery store in North Nashville but I don't think it was within the Germantown boundaries.Charles and my grandfather Ernest were butchers.
For many years Charles had a meat store in the old market house on the public square. My grandfather worked for his uncle in the market house and later had a meat stall in the market house. My dad also worked in the market house when he was a boy.
I'm not sure how Uncle Charlie got into the butchering business but it was because of him that my grandfather became a butcher.Uncle Charlie probably got started withbutcher Charles Stier, the husband of his Aunt Ada.
My great great grandfather August worked as a blacksmith and wagon maker. He lived south of the city on So. Spruce Street (now 8th Ave. So.) before purchasing a farm in the Antioch community. My grandfather Ernest was born on the farm. The older boys mostly grew up on the farm but when my grandfather "Papa" was about 10 his mother moved into a house in the city near the City Cemetery.A few years later she purchased a house over in the 10th South area and lived there until her death in 1943.Oldest son Louie managed the farm and lived out in Antioch much of the year. I'm sure Papa was out there helping in the summer while he was growing up.
