Boy, it sure would help if some of the descendants of these various Gabriel Scotts would come forth with their particular Gabriels and the wives.
It's been hard just to count them. There seems to be a few in KY in the late 1700s and very early 1800s.
Through google, I found a site about a Scottish-Irish settlement in VA which has quite a few Scotts. No Gabriel, but it did mention a David Scott who became the legal guardian of two Scott boys (John and ?Jacob)who were the sons of a John Scott. The lesson I learned from that is we could find one of the Gabe's living in the house of a David or a different Scott man, and it doesn't necessarily mean that that was his father. That could be the truth with any of our lines, actually. Not just our Scotts.
The reason I decided to try to trace the Gabriels is because the next generation of my line of Scotts, who lived in KY and moved to IN and IL, named their sons Gabriel M. Scott. I wasn't getting anywhere with the more common given names....John, George, Wm, etc.
Actually, some of my Scotts have uncommon names, but I ran into a dead-end with them....Flemmon, Parmer, Gabriel Marion, Greenup, Foster, Jasper Milton, Crystal/Christal David William Scott.
Flemmon was my 2gr grandfather.I know that Crystal D.W., Parmer, Greenup, and Gabriel M. were for sure Flemmon's brothers. He was said to have other brothers named Thomas, Joseph, John, and at least one sister, named Nancy DeMoss, and probably more.
Flemmon was b. 1819 in IL.Crystal was b. 1812/13 in KY..possibly Greenup Co. or Fleming Co.The bulk of them were born in IL.Some may have been born in Cass Co, IN. Flemmon and Crystal were ordained ministers.
Flemmon named one of his sons Gabriel M. Scott.Crystal named one of his sons Gabriel M. Scott.Flemmon had at least two grandsons named Gabriel Scott.I'm not sure about Greenup, Flemmon's bro.Flemmon also had a son named Greenup.Flemmon had a brother named Gabriel M. Scott.
Flemmon and his siblings parents have been said to have been a Rev. John Scott b. , and the mother was said to be Polly/Mary DeMoss b. 1794 KY.I did find a marriage between a John Scott and Polly Crystal/Christal from Fleming Co, KY.I need to look into the parents more before I can be sure about the parents.
But the point is....the name Gabriel Scott is used quite often in my line of Scotts...after they left KY.That leads me to believe their were Gabriels in their line before the left KY....but which one, and was he a brother or the father or what?He must have been close kin and significant to have so many named after him.
Flemmon named his lst born Thomas Scott....he didn't name any of his boys John...unless John was a given name which wasn't the name used.Flemmon's son, Gabe, did name one of his son's John, but that was a common name in Gabe's mother's family, the Jameses, who lived all around my Scotts in IN, IL, and Ozark Co, MO.Flem's Gabe was b. 1850 IL.The Rev. John Scott who might have been Flem's father died in 1847.Polly died in 1851.
I've traced who I believe to be the lst Gabriel Scott in America in PA in the mid-1700s.I'm inclined to think that's where my and others'line of Scotts settled when they landed in America in the late 1600s or the early 1700s.
The lot of them were religious. My line is loaded with preachers as well. The Gabriel I mentioned left PA, went to VA, and then to Guilford Co, NC.Two of Gabriel's brothers died there, Matthew and Andrew.Brother John stayed there until his death. Some of the PA bunch, after going to NC, scattered throughout the south.Gabriel apparently went back to VA and then to KY.I'm also inclined to believe he might have died in KY as well. That's as far as I've studied him so far.
In the groups of Scotts in PA was also families with the surname of Flemmon.Hmmmm! The plot thickens.
I will be going back to this Gabriel Search when I'm finished with the project I'm working on.I'm working on finding out why Flemmon's son, Gabriel M. Scott, left Ozark Co, Mo after 1880, moved to Ft.Smith, AR, changed his name to Robert Franklin James (his mother's name was Phebe James), married his 2nd wife in 1888 in Ft. Smith, moved to OK, sent for a fake medical certificate, practiced medicine the rest of his life in SE Okla. The five sons from his lst marriage who were born in MO moved to OK and lived close to their father (Gabriel), but they also changed their names to James.Gabriel was known as Dr. Frank James in OK, and he and his 2nd wife had eight children.....13 altogether. All of the descendants from both sets of children, to this day, are James...not Scotts....and they are having trouble believing it.So, perhaps not the same Gabriel, but I'm still doing a DIFFERENT Gabriel Scott
Search. When I learn when and why Gabriel Marion Scott changed his name to Dr. Robert Franklin James, I'll get back to tracing Flemmon's ancestors.
The Gabriel in PA, NC, VA, and KY I feel is likely kin, but how he was related, I do not know. It's not proven who Flemmon and the siblings parents were for sure.I have two reasons for thinking they might very well have been Rev. John Scott and Polly______.If I ever find the right Gabriel, I'll have to first establish who Flemmon's father and mother were before I can hook him up with his Gabriel.
