Here we are about 5 yr. after this post.I am responding again as I'm back to this same search.
I know that the Gabriel Scott who md. Ester Davis, Martha Zornes, and Esther (Henderson) Miller, widow of Wm Miller, was the same Gabriel.
It seems that Ester Davis was the mother of his only known children...James W. Scott and Mary "Polly" Louellyn (Scott) Offill. If he and Martha had children, they must have been born and died in between census records as they aren't found in census records.
Also, I am, at this point, believing that Nancy Bagby was probably Gabe's lst wife, b/4 Esther Davis. On Gabriel Scott's marriage license to Nancy Bagby on 26 Aug 1810 in Greenup Co, KY, David Scott is named as Gabriel's father.Gabe was born in 1792.His bondsman was John D. Scott.
I believe this John was my 3rd gr grandfather.A Rev. John D. Scott md. Polly Crystal on 13 May 1812 in Fleming Co, KY, where Polly lived. My 3rd gr grandparents were Rev. John Scott and Polly Crystal.John was b. about 1788.
I found online a brief account of Gabriel Scott's family written by his granddaughter, Theresa (Offill) Ross. She did not know Gabriel's father was David, as was stated on the marriage consent for Gabe and Nancy Bagby. She said Gabriel's mother was named "Jane" and that Esther Davis was Jane's daughter in law.
The account also said that David Scott and Martha Davis were the parents of Esther Davis. If that's the case, then I see it the way you do...that Esther was either an illegit. daughter of Martha's or Martha was md. to a Mr. Davis before marrying David Scott. I suppose that would mean that either Jane was deceased before David md. Martha Davis or David and Jane had divorced.
It is confusing without records. There was an older Jane Scott in the 1810 Greenup Co, KY census. In the same year, there was an older David Scott in Greenup Co.They were both heads of their own households. Did David and Jane divorce after Gabriel's birth, and David then md. Martha Davis, and Gabriel ended up falling in love with his step-sister?I suppose, in that case, Esther's mother was also her step-mother-in-law.
If Gabriel's mother was deceased, would they still refer to Jane as Esther's mother in law.
I haven't found two Gabriel Scotts the same age in Greenup Co, KY.There may have been, but I'm not finding two.
A descendant of John D. Scott and a descendant of Gabriel were Y DNA donors. They were perfect matches.
Rethinking all this, how do you see it?Do you think there was a divorce??
