I don't show Ware OGLESBY, husband of Elizabeth Dancy COLE, as ever having been in Texas.
I have that Ware OGLESBY was b. abt. 1768 in Goochland or Buckingham county VA; d.during 1841 near Monroe in Overton county TN. He and Elizabeth were md. on August 13, 1795 in Fluvanna county VA. She was b. abt. February 08, 1778 in Fluvanna county VA; d. abt 1865 in Oklona, Monroe or Tishomingo county MS; daughter of James COLE and Fannie WILLS.
Now, one of the children of this couple was Hardin Perkins OGLESBY b. August 17, 1807 in Albermarle county VA or Surry county NC; d. abt. November 04, 1848 in Monroe, Overton county TN. Hardin md. Nancy Jane ARMSTRONG in abt 1830 in Monroe, Overton county TN. She was b. December 01, 1811 in Overton county TN; d. 1858 in Monroe, Overton county
TN; daughter of Landon ARMSTRONG and Ann DAUGHERTY.
This couple had a son, Landon Ware OGLESBY (aka Col. Landan or Landers OGSBY or OGLESBY) b. Abt. November 22, 1833 probably in Overton county TN; d. January 16, 1887 at his home "Honeysuckle Hill" in Plano, Collin county TX.
Now, this is definitely the Landon Ware OGLESY that was in the Dallas and Collin county TX area. On September 21, 1854 in Jackson county TN, he md. Martha Melinda FOWLER, daughter of Samuel B. M. FOWLER and Adeline BUTLER. Martha was b. March 16, 1839 at Butler's Landing, Jackson (now Clay) county TN; she d. at her home "Honeysuckle Hill" in Plano, Collin county TX on October 07, 1907. Both of them are buried at Plano Mutual Cemetery in Plano, Collin county TX
as I have visited their grave site for a second time last July.
He did fairly well finanically for a period of time as a merchant. The 1870 census for Collin county showed him with $13,200 or personal property and $60,000 of real estate. He owned 8 lots in Plano, as well as acreage elsewhere in Texas - Dallas, Pecos, and Reeves counties. However the post war years and Panic of 1873were difficult for many in the area. He was part of several establishments that failed. For a period of time he also served as the Tax Assessor/Collector for Collin county.
On Tuesday January 18, 1887 The Dallas Daily Herald reported that he had died the preceding Sunday following a suicide attempt.
"It is well known that Col. Oglesby was for several terms tax collector of Collin county, and a very prominent candidate last summer for the position of state comptroller of public accounts. He was believed to be the strongest man in the race up to the assembling of the state convention at Galveston, when reports were circulated to the effect that Col. Oglesby was seriously embaarassed
"He was known among the colonel’s friends that these troubles weighed heavily on his mind, but it was hoped that in pursuit of other avocations they would soon be forgotten. He has been very close at home the last few months; after turning over the tax collector’s books, etc, to his successor, his time was given to private business. It seems, however, that the trouble of his arrearage with the State and county, with his political disappointment, was greater than he could bear, and on Sunday took a draught which ended his useful and otherwise honored life.
"It is now understood that the colonel was behind with the State $2600 and to the county $25,000. He carried life insurance to the amount of $60,000."
My great-great-grandparents were living with his family at the time of the 1870 Collin county census. I am still trying to determine if they were in some way related. I am interested in learning everything I can about the family and have much more.
