Verna you are so correct.Genealogy.com is not the only one doing this.
I use Family Tree Maker for my personal data base and record keeping. Every time I reach a certain amount of names I am prompted by "World Family Tree" to submit my data base electronically to them.I then can buy back the information I have submitted. So can anyone else.
I have tuned in to personal web pages and saw famlies advertised as their personal research and included errors I had submitted right down to mis-spellings of my nephews and nieces.I have received offers of help from "researchers" on my family and when I say yes I am provided with material I had submitted to WFT.
I had reams of information on one particular family line. Some of it was my own research but most was an accumulation of material provided to me over the years from various correspondants and fellow researchers. Then again I tune in to a web page and see where this fellow had researched and taken this line back to the 1400s.I started reading and boy did it look familiar!!!!!! Guess why!!!!!!!?
Needless to say I no longer submit my data base to WFT when prompted.
My anger however is not really with WFT.They are a commercial concern and advertise that they are selling the information. My anger is more vented toward the people who plagiarize this information and advertise it as their research.
