Wayne,
I have been traveling so much, I have not had the opportunity to post information here. However, having said this, I have really enjoyed reading the information you sent me by email.
I suggest (if you haven't already) read the messages I posted to this forum and Ochiltree forum regarding the discovery I made regarding 2THOMAS OGLETREE and his presence in that part of NC and his interaction with the date of 1774 and the WILL you mentioned. As I said to your previously, this is a major discovery in that 2THOMAS was living in Virginia about 1782, according to the census and tax records I personally researched in the GA Archives which were in Atlanta, GA and now in Morrow, GA.But anyway, getting back to 2THOMAS?He was in that part of NC and he was there in 1774.The key here is WHY?Where was he living at that point? Was he in a household with a relative? What was HIS connection to those in the will.
It has been said that he could have had no connection, but was just a witness.I don't agree.I believe he was connected and thus, this would make 1JOHN connected as well.KC Ptomey (author and researcher) told me that he believed from every record he located that 2THOMAS was the brother of 2JOHN Ogletree, Sr.It is possible that 2THOMAS was actually living in that part of NC in 1774 while his brother 1JOHN was living in VA.We do know there was a DAVID OCHILTREE who arrived in NC by ship in 1773.As you also know, the namesake DAVID is the name of my ancestor and he was the son of 1JOHN Ogletree, Sr.
I have as did KC believe the Christian name DAVID was one which would highly suggest that 1JOHN, SR's father could easily have been a DAVID.My 2DAVID having been the first born son of 1JOHN, SR.
The book I mentioned to you, "Scattered Seed" and it's author, Myrtle Bridges contacted me about 2THOMAS and the spelling of his surname in the Campbell will of 1774, she confirmed it was OGLETREE.Her work can be seen online and is very valuable for this part of the history of NC and the Argyll Colony.
They (Scots) were very clever and apparently it was well planned as to their arrival and where. The colony on NC shores was pre-visited by other well known Scottish Lords and this was read in several or more books at the archives of which I copied.Oddily enough, one of those was James, Lord Ochiltree who came the area north of America and tried then to procure a settlement for Scots. Then land barons from Scotland came as well, among those was John who was the son of Lord Cochrane (Lord Dundonald) of whom was called John of Ochiltree in the Burkes Peerage and other peerage books and according to the Clan Chief of Cochrane of whom I corresponded with by phone and letters (snail mail).
This area of NC is very important to the history of the Ogletree family, especially in light of 2THOMAS having been there at that time, a very important time line in the history of America (1774).
According to descendants corresdence to me, David seems to be their ancestor and they said, he was father of HUGH who was a Rev. Soldier (see DAR) out of that area of NC.
Then we have those mentioned in your messages here and in your emails to me.The Scotts, McLeans, the latter of which were prominently connected to those in the Jura Islands (Scotland) of whom Ms. Railey mentioned in her book, although many believe her records are confused, I believe there were kernals of truth in the tradition that those who came here were from the Jura area of Scotland and that of course would be the Argylls (CAMPBELL).If you also recall, Clan Campbell claims Ochiltree as a cept. From all the information I can gather from them, there was an UCHILTREE heiress and she married a Campbell of whom were descended from the Dukes of Argyll. So, this will be a very interesting time for research.I aready have some interesting papers from Mcleans and their family connections. The Mcleans or McLea were actually part of the Livingstone or Livingston clan according to authorities on the subject.
Good seeing you post, keep looking and we will, working together, be able to link all of it together.Once more, I would be still be interested in the Argyll Colony, New Bern area of NC, but just because it was destined to be and was founded to be the arriving place for Scottish settlers...however, now that we know 2THOMAS OGLETREE was there, this makes it all that more important.Keep up the good work Wayne!
