Hi Dan.Would like to share information with you on your Hanover county findings.I have access to the Hanover records and find several references to William under different spellings but never a reference to John.I know several believe he is the son of William while others believe he is the son of another John.Except for some scattered references (witnessing sheep count, etc) our John is picked up for sure in Caswell County, N.C.
