THE SURNAME OLACE
Olace is a very rare Basque surname. It appears to be linked to Spanish nobility. I don't know much about the surname exept that it may be a Title of Nobility. The title is that of Conde de Olace or Count of Olace. Repoertedly the title was last held by Faustina Olace e Iribarren. My great-great-grandfather was named Isidro Olace y Heredia and he was born in Real del Espiritú Santo, which I believe to be in central Mexico, in 1860. His parents were Miguel Olace and Josefa Heredia. Isidro married María de Jesús Otamendi, who was born in Mexico City in 1863. María de Jesús was the owner of a large "hacienda" near the town of Salvatierra, in the central mexican state of Guanajuato, named Hacienda Maravatío. They had a daughter named Elena Olace y Otamendi, my great-grandmother, who was born in Salvatierra in 1891. She married Manuel Híjar, who was born in the city of Guanajuato in 1878. Their daughter, Emma Híjar y Olace, is my grandmother. She was born in Mexico City in 1922 and married Santiago Greenham, who was born in Mexico City in 1917. I'd like to get in touch with any Olaces who might be out there or with anyone who'd like to talk with me about this surname. Sincerely, David Martínez-Celis
