Dear Nancy,
Thank you for sharing with me your family history and personal condition regarding ALS. I read your posting Re: Henry CALES; you seem to know Ardelia Frances Gaines Olds’ family history. I attached two links for the CALES/GAINES families for readers who want to find out more about them. These are family groups on ancestry.com (free) that individuals have posted; it corresponds pretty well to what I’ve found through the censuses.

On a lighter note, one thing I found out about the CALES and GAINES families in Tazewell Co., IL (1870 census) is that they are tightly linked: Of the three CALES individuals I searched for (Baxter, John, James) a GAINES family was a neighbor or living with CALES/vice-versa. Baxter (John Baxter) CALES was living in a GAINES household, too. One might investigate if and how these two families intermarried.
Now for some exciting news regarding Lemira SPRAGUE OLDS: She didn’t die in the 1870’s!!! In fact, she was very much alive for the 1880 census. She had simply remarried to Joseph MATHEWS (MATHEIS/MATHIAS on 1880 census). In 1880 she was just five houses down from Dow A. OLDS in Valley, Phillips Co., KS. She was also listed with her second husband in the 1870 census in Elkhart. Polk Co., IA (under “MATHEWS, J.”). Three of her children were living with them: Jane, Byron, and Viola OLDS (written as “OLE”). Her son Edwin is listed two houses before (under OLES, E. K.; 1870).One or two of his youngest siblings were living with him (Curtis J.; Sarah D.?). Furthermore, she herself is an example of a woman having children late in life (regarding my earlier comment of “midlife babies”). Her youngest surviving child seemed to have been either Viola OLDS, (b. abt. 1864) or Sarah D. OLDS (b. abt. 1864 IA). Lemira was b. 1819.
I also found Margaret OLDS (wife of Thomas) in the 1870 census, living with Harvey OLDS (b. abt 1826) in Big Creek, Black Hawk Co., IA. Margaret died 5 June 1872 (“aged 83 y. 21 d.”) and was buried next to her husband Thomas OLDS in the Clarkesville Cemetery, Edgerton, Williams Co., OH.
A final note about Lemira SPRAGUE’s family: She had named her siblings as Herman, Seth, and Amanda. In 1850 (her brother) Herman/Hermin SPRAGUE was living in Elk Creek twp., Erie Co., PA with wife Melissa and children (including a son Seth). He died or disappeared after 1851, which is when their last child was born. In 1860 Melissa Sprague was head of household.
There are candidates for Lemira’s sister Amanda and brother Seth, but nothing definite:
-An Amanda SPRAGUE md. Nathan DUNHAM31 Oct. 1841, Erie Co., OH. On the 1850 census, the couple resided in Groton, Erie Co., OH.
-A Seth SPRAGUE (b. abt. 1812, OH) was listed in Erie Co., OH (Margarettatwp.).
0n the 1840 and 1850 censuses.
Keep in mind that this person was not the only “Seth SPRAGUE” listed during this time period, so this is not necessarily Lemira’s brother.
Sincerely,
Virginia
