I have a mystery to solve. My great-great grandmother, Julia NEILSEN was married twice, my great-grandfather came from her first married something I only found out recently. Here's the rundown:
Julia NEILSEN (I've seen it as JOHNSON as well), married a Martin or John (or John Martin) OLESON in Norway (I'm assuming this) and they had a son, Anton (also found as Andrew, per 1880 census). The three of them (another assumption) came to America and Julia had three more sons, Albert (my great-grandfather), James and Martin. Julia's husband died before 1880 as I have found her and her children living with a brother (again an assumption) in Chicago. The dates for Una, Andrew, Albert, Ona, and Martin all match my information, though it lists the childrens' father as being born in Sweden.
By 1900, Julia is married for the second time to Fred A. RING and has several more children: Alexander, Mary, Fred Jr., and Carrie and two that died. She must've married Fred before between 1880 and 1881 because son Alexander was born in August of that year.
I have Julia's death certificate which says her maiden name is NEILSEN, yet on son Martin's death certificate it says JOHNSON and it says she was born in Sweden. The only death certificate that lists her first husband is my great-grandfather's and it says his name is John OLSON. Martin's birth record lists Julia's maiden name as Johnson and his father's name as Martin, that's why I think it is both John AND Martin. Albert's middle name is John.
I feel strongly that the 1880 census I found is the right family despite some of the names being wrong, the ages all fit. Since the first child Anton was born in Norway I can't track them in the 1870 census because he was born in 1871.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I would love to solve this mystery and perhaps start searching in Norway I'd do it now but don't know where to begin. Julia was born in Christinana Norway 11 May 1847, and died 28 Nov 1923 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
