James Olive - Elizabeth Burt; NC - GA
I am looking to correspond with anyone descended from this couple. With all the Olive research done, very little has been done on this branch and I am trying to reconstruct the family unit. Following is some basic information I already have.
Young James Olive passed away intestate in Columbia County, GA in 1820 and his son, John Olive, was granted Letters of Administration. Whether Elizabeth followed him to Georgia or not is inconclusive. The authors of the Olive book believe she passed away in NC, but I have records in GA dated 1803 with the names of "James and Elizabeth Olive". James first started buying land in Columbia County in 1794.
Their children appear to be sons John Olive, Berry Olive, Thomas W. Olive, Wiley Olive, daughters Francis Olive and Delilah Olive. Other possible children could be Ichabod (Bud?) Olive, Absolom Olive and James Olive.
John Olive married Sarah Magruder, daughter of Col. Ninian Offutt Magruder about 1802 and remained in Columbia County. John died January 1837 leaving a will. Their children as follows:
1) Anne Belle Olive married John G. Anderson, John W. Jones and General Vinson.
2) Mary Magruder Olive married John P. Eve
3) Martha Burt Olive married Sen. Andrew Jackson Miller
4) Young Burt Olive married Beulah Childs
5) Fabius Johnson Olive
6) Louisa Elizabeth Olive married Peyton Sutherland
7) Evalina Francis Olive married Nelson C. Trowbridge
Berry Olive married Elizabeth (Eliza/Betsy) Wilkins, daughter of sheriff William Wilkins May 18, 1813 and had no children. Berry died intestate in 1832.
Thomas W. Olive married Elizabeth Wilkins, daughter of Justice of the Peace Thomas Wilkins and died about 1837 leaving one son, Thomas B.W. Olive (also refered to after 1837 as Thomas W. Olive). Thomas B.W. Olive married three times but third wife Mary Merecer is the only confirmed name.
Wiley Olive married Lucretia Newsome, daughter of Claiborne Newsome of Warren County, GA December 22, 1801. Wiley and Lucretia divorced in 1824 and it is unknown what happened to Wiley. He may have moved to Baldwin County where he had received land in a lottery, but letters to him were abandoned in the Warrenton, GA Post Office. The 1820 Columbia County census show 5 males under 16 and 5 females under 16 in the house plus one male between 16 -24. Some of these were living with Lucretia Oliver in Warren County in 1830. The only identified children are as follows:
1) Abel Olive (1804-1884) married Louisa Matilda Blackston
2) Sarah Lucretia Olive (1810-1893) married John George McDonald
I believe James A. Olive, husband of Nancy McDonald, was the male 16-24 in the 1820 census as he appears at Claiborne Newsome's estate sale. Several other Olive marriages in the Columbia/Richmond/Warren County area may indicate Wiley and Lucretia's other children, but no evidence has been found yet. They include Stephen H. Olive, Henry G. Olive, Lucy Olive (McDaniel), Martha Olive (McCrary).
Francis Olive married John Butt, nothing further
Delilah Olive married Edmund Lashley and moved to Pike County, GA. Their children:
1) Elijah Lashley married Mary Wheeler October 12, 1812 in Columbia County
2) Elizabeth Lashley married Lewis Thomas January 8, 1824 in Columbia County
3) Hardy Lashley
4) Sarah Lashley
5) Unnamed son whose family resided in Eastman, Dodge County, Georgia.
As you can see, there are still a lot of holes and unanswered questions which I would like to see filled in and answered. I still live in the Columbia County area where I can do research so anyone with information that I can work with, please contact me.
