I am just returning to my research on this branch of my family after many years.I am descended from Solomon Ooley and Esther West through their daughter Sarah (Sally) Ooley who married John Carpenter in Green Co KY.They had a son, John C. Carpenter, who married Caroline Heck in Indiana. The older Carpenter daughter, Sarah Catherine (named after both grandmothers--the other being Catherine Wolf Heck), died young.Their second daughter, Mary Antha Carpenter, was my great grandmother.
My uncle always said that the Ooleys were Native Americans.I have pictures of Mary Antha as both a young woman and an older woman, who would be the granddaughter of Sally Ooley, and she is clearly of Native American descent. She had seven daughters, all of whom bore strong Native American features evident in their pictures.
Rumor has it that they were Cherokee. I have never researched any Native American individuals and I don't know where to begin. I guess the first thing I want to know is the tribe. Were they Cherokee? Was Solomon Ooley a Cherokee or was it his wife? Will we ever know?
I have been away from this branch of my tree for so long that I may have missed some discoveries or updating. If you can help me catch up, please do.
