Re: Mary Elizabeth Orran
#6 - Mary Elizabeth Orran Shelton is my 3rd Great-grandmother. She was called Betsy, and was mentioned in 1894 in the Maury Democrat newspaper as the oldest Great-great-grandmother in the history of the US. She lived to be 93 years old and passed away in 1895. Her marriage bond is dated 1822, but she and Josiah Shelton started having children in 1820 when their first child was born - Pinckney. I descend through their 8th child, Lucinda Shelton.
Josiah was listed in the 1830 census of Rockingham county, NC. He was listed with the following headcount: 1 male 5-10 (either Pinckney, or Hamilton), 1 male 30-40 (himself age 30), 3 females under 5 (Sarah age 5, Agnes age 2, Martha born 1830), 1 female 5-10 (Minerva age 7), 1 female 15-20 (unknown), 1 female 20-30 (Sarah age 28).
IN 1837, they moved to KY.
Josiah is listed in 1840 in Henderson county, KY with 1 male under 5 (Joseph Zealot age 4), 2 males 10-15, and 1 male 40-50 (himself age 40); 3 females under 5 (Amy age 1), 3 females 5-10 (Mary age 8, Lucinda age 7, Eliza age 5), 3 females 10-15 (Sarah age 15, Agnes age 13, Martha age 10), 1 female 40-50 (Elizabeth age 38?), and 1 female 70-80 (mother, Sarah age 78).
Josiah is then listed in 1850 Henderson county, KY, then in 1860 in Webster county which is a newly formed county in 1860. He died in 1867.
Altogether, they had 14 known children that are well-documented.
A William Orran was the bondsman for Mary Elizabeth and Josiah's marriage in 1822, and since her father was a John, then it had to be her brother who was the bondsman.
