Hi Nick,
The Orrell family history in the medieval period goes back to Lancashire in the twelfth century. It is far from certain that Dorrell is a connected family as this could be a branch of the Darell/Dayrell family who did originate in Yorkshire.Although the family in Lancashire was known as 'de Orell' in medieval times, I have never seen in rendered as 'D'orrell or Dorrell. The Darell family probably originated from Airelle in France and would be D'Airelle, which later became Darell. The Orrell family originated in the manor of Orrell in Lancashire which had that name at the time of the conquest and the lords thereof were most probably of pre-conquest origin, most likely, Norse.
Terry.
