Have you ever been to the Ortiz rooms at the Hilton in Santa Fe? They have a picture of Nicholas Ortiz, and a brief history of the family, on the wall. There is a fountain there where the original family well used to be. Apparently the lobby of the Hilton was part of the family estate.
My great-grandmother was an Ortiz and she lived her entire life in the family "compound" in downtown Santa Fe. It was also the house where my father grew up surrounded by houses full of aunt, uncles and cousins.
According to the family history I was always told, the Ortiz family owned all of the land at the Hilton, DeVargas Mall and Rosario cemetery. Rosario Chapel was commissioned by one of the Ortiz ancestors and named after his wife, Rosario Duran Ortiz.
