Notes for Rufus Carson Lackey: He was a farmer. Rufus enlisted in the Confederate Army at Potaligo on March 1, 1863 by Capt. Skinner.He was a private in Company H 5th Regt.South Carolina Cavalry.Roll for Apr. 30 to Aug. 31,1864 shows him absent, detailed with un-serviceable horses, horse died July 9, 1864. Rollfor Sept. & Oct. 1864 shows him absent, dismounted Battn. (no horse) horse died July 9, 1864..The men had to furnish there own horse. Another record dated December1, 1864 shows him on a receipt roll for clothing.A musterroll dated June 30, 1863 shows him on Furlough for 10 days fromJune 23.Roll for July and Aug. 1863 show him on sick furloughfrom June 23, 1863 per furlough certificate.After the war he returned home and continued to farm.He died at the home of his son Josh, on March 23, 1915.On the 1910 Census Rufus and Sarah were living in the Sammy Swamp section of Clarendon County, and their Grand Daughter Sallie Bradham was living with them.The 1860 Sumter District Census Rufus 23 Farming and living in the Manchester P.O. section.Living with him were Sarah 23 and Ella 3.The 1870 census shows Rufus 35 still living at Privateer, farming, with Sarah 35, Ella 13, Julia 4, Clara 1. The 1880 S.C. census shows Rufus 43, farming, living at Privateer.With him were Sarah 42, Julia 13, Clara 11, Mary 9, William 7, Catherine 6, Hampton 3, Preston 1.
