Generation No. 2
2.Rene2 Ouellet (Francois1) was born about 1645 in St. Jacques-du-Hautpas,Paris, France, and died 15 Jan 1722 in Ste. Anne de la Pocatière, QC.He married (1) Anne Rivet, King's Daughter 08 Mar 1666 in St. Famille, Québec City, QC (ct 04, Becquet). She was born about 1635 in St. Gervais de Seez, Basse, Normandie, France, and died 05 Apr 1675 in Château Richer, Montmorency, QC.He married (2) Marie-Therese Migneault-dit-Chatillon 06 Feb 1679 in Québec City, QC, daughter of Jean Migneault-dit-Chatillon and Louise-Marie Cloutier. She was born 09 Sep 1651 in Québec City, QC, and died 03 Dec 1728 in Kamouraska, QC.
Notes for Rene Ouellet:
This pioneer had beautiful handwriting and signed his name "Houallet".The "H" is a silent letter. He was baptized on June 1st, so he must have been born sometime in May of 1639.
Rene Ouellet: arrived on the St. Andre to Québec, Summer 1659.
We can find Jean Ouellet in page 158 of ""La population du Canada en 1666"by historian Marcel Trudel in 1995.( Jean Houâllet dit Valet, homme, marié, 31 ans, sachant signer, habitant, originaire du Poitou , son épouse Anne Rivet (widow of Gregoire Hisse) 24 ans, ne sait pas signer, du Poitou.)
On Feb 6, 1673, Rene Houallet obtained the concession of the second ground in the east of St. Famille parish. He had already cultivated this land for years before receiving it for his services.Sixteen days after the land was his, he sold it to Rene Couttard. Then he rented grounds from Themothee Roussel and Pierre Soumade, on the Coast of Beaupre.
In 1989, a stone was placed on this land that had been cleared by Rene Houallet, in Sainte Famille, QC.
His first wife Anne Rivet (one of the King's Daughters) after 10 years of marriage fell seriously sick and died on April 5, 1675.In 1678 Rene entrusted his three young sons to friendly families. All three of his sons from his first marriage with Anne Rivet, became my8th great grandfathers. He then left to cultivate the land of the seigneur of Rivière Ouelle. For this work he received eight arpents of land.
In 1679 he married Therese Mignot, the young widow of the laborer Nicolas Lebel.Therese Mignot is already the mother of four children and had inherited four arpents of land at St. Anne of the Grande Anse (LaPocatiere). In this second marriage Rene went on and had 8 more children. His daughter Marie Anne also went on to become my 8th great grandmother.
Between Rene's two marriages,I have 11 branches of Ouellets. The surname of Ouellet as my ancestors ends in the early 1800s.
In 1690 Rene and his four sons join their neighbors for a surprise attack on the British troops. As the British were about to disembark their ship, at the point of Rivière Ouelle, someone yelled "fire".Though the French eventually lost to England, they did win this battle and turned away the British.
On Aug. 10, 1997 while celebrating 325 anniversary a commemorative plate was affixed on a stone at the entry of the cemetery of Rivière Ouelle.
In 1721 he had to sell part of his land to pay his debts. In his will he left one aprent of land to the parish of St. Anne to build a church in the future.René Ouellet died 15 January 1722 and was buried the next day at La Pocatière. In 1966, on this land the Ouellette descendants set up a monument in Rene's memory and that of his wives and all their children.
"THE HEROES OF RIVIERE-OUELLE"
"Abbot Casgrain wrote the following appraisal of this unique religious leader:
"'Ardent and impetuous of character, soldierly in bearing with looks that pierced one's soul just as all the missionaries of former times: such was the curate of Riviere-Ouelle, who was also a pious and zealous priest.'
"On this October morning, our 'pious and zealous priest' would have gladly exchanged his rough homespun robe for a coat of mail from the crusades of the middle ages, so much did he feel like the soul of a warrior. Said he to his parishioners:
"'I would not acknowledge you if you show yourselves cowardly enough to let here debark the miscreants from Boston without striking a blow. You know what waits for you if you let them come near: they will burn your houses, your church, profane the holy vessels like they have done
elsewhere and carry you away into captivity; you, your wives and children. Remember that these men are the enemies of God as well as ours. Take up your arms, and hold yourselves ready at the first signal!'
"He needed say no more to convince this handful of peace loving colonists: it was no sooner said than done. Each ran home to take the family gun down off the mantle and fill their powder horns and leather sacks of leaden shot. They took cover behind the brush which lined the river bank and waited in silence for the fleet which had already appeared over the horizon. As planned, the enemy dropped anchor across from their village and small boats filled with soldiers began leaving the ships. As soon as the invader came near the shore, a shower of shot greeted them. Surprised by this not-so-cordial reception, and with the dead and wounded filling the boats, the oarsmen put about and headed for open water. The news of this feat of arms spread like wildfire to Quebec and undoubtedly prompted Frontenac, when face to face with the emissary of Phips, to make that famous retort which we so well know.
"Continuing his account of this event, Abbot Casgrain tells us that Monsieur de Francheville had driven back the assault force with but thirty-nine combatants. The names of some of them were: Francois and Joseph Deschamps, the sons of the absent Seigneur; Robert Levesque, [Jean-]Galeran Boucher, Charles Miville, Michel Bouchard, Pierre Dancosse, Joseph Renault, Guillaume Lizot, Rene Oullet, Jean Pelletier, Jean Lebel, Pierre Emond, Mathurin Dube, Jean Mignot dit Labrie, Noel Pelletier, Jean Gauvin, Pierre de Saint-Pierre, Nicolas Durand, Francois Autin, Sebastien Boivin and Pierre Hudon dit Beaulieu."(13 of these men are my ancestors.Their sons also joined in this assault.)
Notes for Anne Rivet, King's Daughter:
"King's Daughters", page 493, Anne Rivet was born about 1635 in the parish of Saint-Gervais in Sees, Normandie. Widowed by Grégoire Hisse, collector of the huitième (eighth) tax in Brittany, Anne left for Canada in 1665 at about age 30, taking with her goods worth an estimated 300 livres for her dowry.A value of $4,275 in the year 2000 in the USA.
On 08 March 1666, Anne married René Ouellet in Québec City. She was not able to sign the marriage contract drawn up 04 March by notary Becquet, but her husband was, as did Governor Courcelles, Intendant Talon, the Chevalier de Tracy and other dignitaries.
Anne Rivet died 05 April 1675 at Château-Richer, where she was buried two days later.
Notes for Marie-Therese Migneault-dit-Chatillon:
In the 1666 Beaupre census her name was spelt Tereze Mignaux and her father's name was spelt Mignot in the Beauport census. She links my two parents with each of her husbands.Nicolas Lebel, her first husband, goes to Arthur Manseau. Her second husband Rene Ouellet goes to Irene Ricard. Notes for Charles Miville-dit-Deschenes:
Their daughter Louise Marie Charlotte Miville married her second cousin Bernard Miville. At PRDH their marriage contract has no note for a special dispensation. This was perhaps due to the fact that their place of marriage is still unknown.Perhaps they never got married in the church, if they couldn't get a dispensation. Thier first child Jean Bernard was born on 26 July 1760, since she was not pregnant, it would have been almost impossible to get a special dispensation from the Catholic Church.
Of their 15 children at least 8 died before they reached the age of 14.

Notes for Jean-Baptiste Choret:
It appears that the birth information of his eight children has vanished. They can not be found in PRDH, Jette or Tanguay. The micro-film is like a black ink sheet.
Children of Marie-Anne Ouellet and Charles Boucher are:
71 i. Marie-Therese4 Boucher, born 18 May 1706 in Rivère Ouelle, Kamouraska, QC; died 18 Sep 1776 in La Pocatière, Kamouraska, QC.She married Jacques Dessaint-dit-St.Pierre, Capt. Bef. 31 Dec 1728 in Unknown, QC; born 15 Mar 1699 in La Grande Anse, Rivière Ouelle, Kamouraska, QC; died 15 Apr 1774 in La Pocatière, Kamouraska, QC.
Notes for Marie-Therese Boucher:
PRDH says that Marie-Thérèse is the daughter of Charles Boucher & Marie-Anne Ouellet that were married on 18 Nov 1704 at Rivière Ouelle and that she was born and baptized on May 18th, 1706 in Rivière Ouelle, Québec.
However PRDH added a footnote to Marie-Thérèse's file that states that her connection to those parents is NOT proven. In other words, the PRDH staff believe that Marie-Thérèse was probably the daughter of Charles Boucher & Marie-Anne Ouellet but cannot state this as a certainty because of the missing marriage record. They perhaps hesitated to make any claim because Tanguay differed with Jette and no marriage contract was ever found.
Tanguay claimed the parents of Marie Thérèse Boucher were Philippe Boucher and Marie Anne Mignier, that were married on 10 Nov. 1693 at Rivière Ouelle. He has a daughter Thérèse listed with both families (one with a birth date and one without).Jette has only one Thérèse listed so I am inclined to go with Jette.Since I have other ancestors from both Charles and Philippe Boucher, it will not affect my genealogy.
PRDH is not perfect but it is as close as most family researchers can come to the original church records which are written in a mixture of antique French & Latin in a penmanship style which is very hard to decipher.

=======================
My resources are limited because I live in Oregon. I hope that you use this information only as a guide. I welcome corrections and additions from anyone that has access to the original files.
Originally I paid a genealogy society to trace the direct lines for 6 of my 8 great grandparents. They used the books that were compiled by volunteers for each parish. Because so many individuals had the same name, I eventually found some errors in these books. Then I used Tanguay and found out that he may be about 75% right and Jette (that goes to 1730) is about 90% right. Then just as I thought that I was finished, I found PRDH (University of Montreal) and I believe that they may be 98% right and still make corrections to their records. They go up to 1799 for marriage contracts and 1850 for some deaths. Some people have the luxury of having the original records at their disposal. I do not have that and with 17,000 individuals in my data base, I can not afford to pay for copies of all the originals. At that point I confirmed every that I had with the records at PRDH. Whenever I say “about” for a birth date it means that PRDH did not find it or if it is in the 1800s, I did not look it up because of my lack of resources.
PRDH uses the most common spelling variation for the names. This makes it easier to trace the families. They do not always use the original name that appears on the contracts or birth records. That is ok with me, because many individuals before the 1900s could not sign their names and did not even care how others spelt it. As a result the same person’s name took on a variety of spellings. I also kept the “dit” (aka) names because eventually brothers from the same family, picked a different aka name.
As for the pioneers, I also used Peter Gagné’s English books on the single girls that arrived in New France between 1634 & 1662 and his book on the single girls that are referred to as the King’s Daughters that arrived between 1663 & 1673. These girls were recruited and paid by the King to go to New France (Québec) to get married and colonize the area.
Most of my information for the 1800-1900s comes from people on the web. The program that I use does not allow for baptismal dates, so if I don’t have a birth date, I use the baptismal date. The same goes for death vs. burial dates and actual wedding vs. contract dates. The newer programs have these features, but I will not be going through 18,000 records to make the changes.
It is like I said in the beginning; use this information as a guide only. I view genealogy as a hobby and not as pure science.
As for the stories, I got them all in French on the web and I translated them for my grandchildren. I had not read or spoken French in over 40 years, so it was difficult and may not be the best translation.
Enjoy, Janet
