Hi Dean,
We have talked before. My great, great grandmother was Josephine Pacelli. Now that you mention San Valentine, Torio, I suspect there is a connection. My Josephine Pacelli married Gaetano Tortora and their son, Gaetano, was born in Pagani and married a Concetta Monfredonia from Sarno who ran a general store in Terra Annunciata.Gaetano II and Concetta had 10 children including my grandfather & his sister Margaret. They were both born in Sarno.Margaret always said she remembered my grandfather, Albert Tortora taking her by the hand and saying, "Let's go to St. Valentino Toro to visit Uncle Angelo Pacello."Sarno is 2.5 miles from San Valentine. This could not have been your Guiseppe (Angelo) as he was younger than they were.Although maybe Francesco (born 1845) had a brother named Angelo in San Valentine.
Concetta and her children moved to NY in about 1898 - a little after your folks. At first they lived in new Rochelle, then 620 Lexington Ave.One of the boys, Angelo Tortora became a doctor, and lived at 703 Fourth Ave., Brooklyn. They also lived on Manhattan for awhile.Later my grandfather lived on Staten Island & then the Bronx (then to Calif.)I heard rumors they had a barber shop (with a bookie joint in the back room).Another son, Frank Tortora married Dora Sorge. Her father started the first Italian/American grocery store. He would help Italians come to the US and get started.
I know this is just a bunch of random facts, but one never knows what little item may connect.
On July 29 of this year (2008) I mailed letter to the churches in San Valentine & Sarno but have not heard from them.
Barbara
