John R. Paddison, VA-NC
John R. Paddison, b. Prince William County, VA, 1846, son of English-born parents (George, a teacher, and Catherine), who moved to NC (New Hanover County, now Pender)in 1856. Left school at 14 in Apr 1861 to accompany older brother, Richard P. Paddison, to enlist -- he as musician. In fall, 1862, discharged at father's request as being under 18, he returned for several months of schooling, worked in store until 18, then re-enlisted (coast arty). Detailed to signal service along NC coast. Captured at fall of Fort Fisher and imprisoned at Point Lookout, MD, until war's end. Known post-war as "major." Died 16 Sep 1919, Surry County, NC. Obit has middle initial as E, rather than R (confirmed in several census reports and military service records). Published photo extant.
