Re: tracing my padgett family tree
23andme.com is where I did the DNA test..They keep all the information on secured servers so no one can get your info unless you share it..
They send you a test kit by mail..You collect the saliva sample and mail it back..They email you when your results are in, and you go to the site and log in to your account. They do maternal line test on females, both maternal and paternal on males, and autosomal on both male and female..The autosomal test will be what brings cousin matches from both of your parents, and THEIR parents, and some from further back..Range on majority of mine are 3rd to distant cousins..They can't tell exactly which level of cousin is, but I got one match that's a solid 3rd cousin..We have the same gg-grandparent(s). But I never knew this cousin existed.. It's really fun..
It's not overly expensive..They knocked it down to 99.00 for the test, and 99.00 for a one year sub to your account..but this month I believe they knocked the test price further down to like 75.00.. To me it's well worth the price because of all the avenues it has opened up for me with my genealogy..The DNA testing is not useful without genealogy, unless you do it for health reasons..They do have surveys you take and they can tell you what health issues you may have based on your DNA and the information you give on the surveys..I chose not to even see my health results..But other people want to see those..
Yes, I vaguely remember something about the carving on the tree at Roanoke..
