Rhonda,
I don't know if you're still following this thread, but I thought I'd reply in case you are.
It appears we are both trying to find info about the same Apollos R Paine of Orwell, Ohio.
What I have is that Apollos was born in Massachusetts in 1789 and died in Orwell on 25 June 1860.He was married to Mary Chandler who was born in 1789 and died on 25 July 1859.Both are buried in the South Orwell Cemetery in Lot 20 E.
Their children were:
Milton A C Paine b1817 d1834 Orwell
Lucinda Paine b 6Feb1820 Orwell d ?
Charity A Paine b1821 d 1892 Orwell
Emerson Paine b1824 d1880 Orwell
Salmon Paine b1827 d1890 Orwell
Mary S Paine b1831 d1834 Orwell
Hannah Paine b1837 Orwell d1882 Orwell
Mary Chandler's parents were Joseph Chandler (born in Massachusetts in March, 1760 and died 18 September 1831 in Orwell) and Abigail (born in Massachusetts).According to the findagrave.com website, there is an Abigail Chandler buried in the South Orwell Cemetery, Lot 40 E, who died in 1868 and was the widow of a Joseph Chandler.
Regarding Apollos, I have some early 20th Century Orwell newspaper clippings that say Apollos was the first white settler in Orwell. He emigrated from Stillwater, Saratoga County, New York in October, 1815 and settled in Orwell Township on 1 April 1817.His daughter Lucinda was the first white child born in the Township. One article also mentions that Gates Chandler, son of Solomon Chandler, was the first male child born in the township on 6 Jan 1824.
Perhaps none of this is news to you.Either way, I would be interested in any additional information you may have found regarding Apollos; in particular his place of birth in Massachusetts, parents, etc.
My own line to Apollos is through his son Emerson.
If you like, we can trade notes whenever something new surfaces.
Best wishes,
Tom
