Dear Keith,
I obtained the following email from Cardinia Shire in Victoria, Australia a couple of years ago:
"From: Sue Harris
To: 'Harrison'
Subject: RE: Pakenham
Date: Monday, 31 January 2000 8:33
"Dear Mr Harrison, It seems as if there is some conjecture on the naming of the township of Pakenham, however it is probably named after Major-General Sir Edward Michael Pakenham who served with distinction in the Peninsula War. The first settler was probably Dr William Jamieson whose IYU run is believedto have been taken up in 1838. For more details please refer to the book "In the Wake of the Pack Tracks" by the Berwick-Pakenham Historical Society, copies of which are available from the local library.
"Regards Sue Harris"

You may be aware that Pakenham, Ontario is also named after Sir Edward. (http://www.ngw.nl/index4.htm?int/can/pakenham.htm refers). You'll find more information on Sir Edward (should you require it) on a number of sites, a good one being http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~awoodley/harry/harry22.htmlhttp://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~awoodley/harry/harry22.html . Also should you require it you'll find his position in the family on a number of websites, in my own case in generation 3 at http://www.geocities.com/warrow_au/tpak.htmhttp://www.geocities.com/warrow_au/tpak.htm .
If you'd like to get in touch directly, please email me at [email protected].
Regards,
Frank Harrison
