OBIT-Martha Whitney, 82, of MA/VT/FL, dau of Edna and Robert Partch
Martha Partch Whitney, of Gainesville, Fla., died at the age of 82, on Friday, May 14, 2010, after a long illness. She was born in Medford, to Edna and Robert Partch, and moved to Vermont where she grew up in Vergennes. She graduated from Vergennes High School in 1945, and entered the last Cadet nursing program at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. She graduated in 1948, and worked at Cushing VA Hospital for three years where she met her future husband, Curtis. They were married in 1950, lived in Framingham and Malborough for 27 years, before moving to Florida. Martha worked for 49 years at many hospitals as a registered nurse, 25 years in the emergency room, and loved her profession. She spent much of her free time volunteering at the Red Cross of Alachua County, being named Volunteer of the Year in 2001 and 2002. Other interests were knitting, crocheting, and the sports her children and grandchildren were involved in. She is survived by her husband, Curtis; sons, Robert and his wife, Kristen, and William and his wife, Kathy, all of Malborough, James and his wife, Jo-Anne, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Thomas and his wife, Julie, of Gainesville, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She will be buried in a family cemetery in Malborough. Donations, if desired, may be made to the organization of your choice or to the American Red Cross of Alachua County.
