Joseph Pattenden b. 1859

JOSEPH PATTENDEN born at Pound Hill, Mayfield, Sussex, England, on 3 September 1859.They later lived on a large estate at Kilndown at that time owned by the late Field Marshall Lord Beresford who was second in command to the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo.Joseph came to Australia aged 19 years (one reference stated it was 1870).He spent a time in New Zealand before settling at Milson’s Point, (in Sydney)where he was a foreman at Langdon and Langdon’s timber yard.His home and the timber yard were approximately where the Sydney Harbour Bridge pylon is now.Joseph was reported to have taken six months on the water to reach New Zealand.He married ESTHER MARTIN at Marrickville, Sydney on 23rd June 1887 and lived at 7 Campbell Street, North Sydney : William, Lillian,Herbert,Emily,Annie,Frederick(my father),Dorothy & Walter. Esther died due to a haemmorage after a hysterectomy on 7 May 1909 aged 39 years.Joseph had glucoma and was blind in his later years. He died on 6 September 1941 in Sydney.
