PAULUS/BOWLUS in Frederick Co MD
In Frederick County MD it appears that the PAULUS surname evolved into BOALUS (and other spellings) and became BOWLUS as the more common local spelling. And they pronounce BOWLUS there as BOW (like the front of a ship) LUS.
I was surprised that there is no BOWLUS family forum on this Genealaogy.com site and as I looked at this PAULUS one I found some references that appear to link with BOWLUS in Frederick County MD.Researchers should check for the BOWLUS name on Frederick County MD and other sites.
In particular, I see that Janie Dzina is looking for some names that correspond with first names of BOWLUS folks in this county.For example, there is a book "The Evolution of the Chambers, Bowlus and Remsburg Families," by Charley David Bowlus (Anderson IN 1901) that refers to one Henry BOWLUS who came to this country from Germany in 1735 and settled in Middletown, Frederick Co MD.He had four sons, Jacob, George, Valentine and Nicholas. This account focuses on Jacob, the oldest son of Nicholas, who was born in Frederick Co MD March 1768 and married Mary BECKENBAUGH who was born 23 Feb 1768. This account talks of "the Rev. Jacob BOWLUS" and his move to OH and his life there.

in Middletown, Frederick Co MD, for example, list PAULUS, BAULUS and then, later, BOWLUS baptisims. The first being of Anna Margaretha,daughter of Nicholaus PAULUS, who was born 7 Oct 1781.
If you have not looked at these other surnames in Frederick Co MD records, you may be surprised to find some of your "PAULUS" ancestors there!
