Thomas Pawling
PAWLING – In Bath, on Sunday morning, November 7th,Mr. Thomas Pawling, aged seventy-six years.
Mr. Pawling was born in Dutchess county in this State, August 1793 and came to Bath in 1807, at the age of fourteen. There are but few men now living among us whose memory of local events extends back further than his.In early life he was apprenticed to the trade of a carpenter, and labored in that occupation until enfeebled by age.Hew was a man of powerful-frame, and the heavy work which it fell upon him to do, he was not sparing of his strength-his massive shoulders being always seen at a “raising” whenever the hardest lifting was to be done.
In 1832, Mr. Pawlingunited with the Presbyterian Church, then under the pastoral charge of Rev. J. W. Platt. His religious profession was the means of keeping him earnestly intent upon walking in the ways of righteousness.Whatever the struggles through which he may have passed, he was enabled by Divine grace to establish his own character as that of an industrious, patient, king and God-fearing man.Though suffering from partial paralysis for the past few years, he has borne all the enfeebling effects of it without any murmuring, complaining words. His delight was in the law of the Lord, and in His statutes he seemed to have meditated by day and night. His seat in the sanctuary was never vacant except when he was persuaded upon by his family not to expose his health by going out.And at last, that stalwart form was laid low.Its strength departed, but the strength of Christian faith and hope remained. When he could not speak, he could signify by the pressure of the hand and gushes of emotion how strong his hold was upon Him.The respect shown by the large attendance of citizens at his funeral, on that bleak November day, was itself an evidence that a worthy and esteemed citizen had passed away from among us.
The above article was a clipping I found in may family papers. The date in the obit of another person on this clipping gave the date as November28 1869. So I am assuming that Mr. Pawling also died in1869.I have no idea who his family was except that I have a Rebecca Pawlingborn in 1802 and married Charles Willour in Bathe Steuben co NY.I am thinking they may be siblings.
