You are right, there are at least two, maybe three Preston Paynes of N. AL.I need to find the thread from theRev War patriot Matthew Payne, bur at Garriso/Payne Cemetery, Winston Co, AL at the Lawrence County line.
The Preston I am researching was younger than the one born 1812, who, I think, was a son of aforesaid Matthew.
Preston F. Payne born 1824-1833 ? AL married Athena/Althany Suggs, dau of Henry Suggs abt 1858.
Preston's dau, Feraby Payne m James Ferguson and did move to TX.Her obit mentions her brother Doc Fermer/Fennell Payne of Red River Co, TX.
Please send the info on other Paynes who moved to Red River. Also help me connect this Preston F. with Matthew.
Here are his footnotes:
!ANCESTRY: This Preston Payne could be a son of the Preston Payne b 1812, a son of the Rev War soldier Matthew Payne, who is buried in Winston Co, AL. Matthew had at least three sons: John B., James W, and Preston. This is probably a grandson of Matthew.check the 1840 census to see how many sons each had.OR he could be the son of Gavin Payne as shown on the 1850 census of Franklin Co, AL.(see below)
!CENSUS: 1850 U. S. Census, Franklin Co, AL, Dist 6, 25 Nov 1856; page 174B, Dwelling 54, Fam 54. Gavin Payne 50, m, $200pp, b TN abt 1800; Preston Payne 24, merchant, b AL b abt 1826; Martha Ann 11, AL. Note that this family lives near the William Suggs Family.

!HISTORY: Much has been written about the early Payne Family of Winston, Walker, Lawrence, Jefferson Counties of early AL.Interesting stories about the counterfeit money gang that included John B. and James Payne, sons of Matthew Payne are found in Winston: An Antebellum and civil War History of a Hill County of No. AL by Donald B. Dodd as part of the series of books by Carl Elliott pub.1972, Annals of Northwest Alabama. Also see the ALGENWEB.com to go to the Winston Co, website where stories about the Richard E.
