Hi Helen,
Thanks for writing.I'm glad to find someone else who is into the Paynes.Yes, I think Preston (son of Matthew) was born about 1812.I believe he was a son rather than a grandson. My problem is that I can't find the family of Edy Garrison, Preston's wife. You would think that she was a daughter of Stephen Garrison -- or possibly a granddaughter -- but I can't find her listed anywhere. There are later Edy Garrisons, but not one the right age to be married to Preston.
The Paynes moved to Arkansas somewhere around the 1860's and worked on a farm known as Hurricane Farm, owned, I believe, by Atlas Dodd.I descend from Preston and Edy through their daughter, Millie.Millie married William Samples there in Arkansas and their son, Joseph Samples, was my grandfather.William died in 1875 and Millie moved afterward with her brothers, Matthew and Chesley, to Texas in Red River County.By that time, she had given birth also to two daughters, Georgia and -- I forget the name of the other one.She later married a Mr. Mitchell and had later children by him.She died in Oklahoma (I don't have the date) near Hugo while living with one of the daughters.
Both Stephen Garrison and Matthew Payne are veterans of the Revolutionary War which, by the way, entitles us to become members of the DAR, assuming that you are also a Payne or Garrison descendent.
Please tell me how you are related to the Paynes. If you have any questions about them, provided I have the information, I'll be glad to share with you.
Thanks again for writing,
Sallie Rushing ([email protected])
