My g grandfather, James Payne (b.1800-1803, Rowan, NC) stated he left Rowan, NC when he was five to move to Smith, TN. He left Smith,TN in 1818 to settle in Boone, MO with his grandfather, John Payne (Pain). According to an obituary of James, his father, Collier, (but actually Collison) died in Smith, TN during the War of 1812 (in 1814 shortly his discharge from Col. Copeland's Reg.).
In tracking John Payne (Pain) I found him in Caroline, MD with many associations with Isaac Pain, Jr., Isaac Pain, Sr and Sarah Pain in the 1770's, 1780's and 1790's.He is listed in the 1790 Caroline, MD census on the same page with Isaac, Jr. and Sarah with five males (sons?) born after his 1778 marriage to Elizabeth Porter.(Collison Porter is also listed in that census.)
In the 1800 Rowan, NC census he is listed with eight males (sons?) and Isaac Pain (Jr.) is listed with one male born after 1775 (Probably Isaiah Payne who later moved to Monroe, IN.) In 1800 John Pain bought land in the Lick Creek area of Rowan,NC with a Ransom Dudley (a reported friend of Lawrence Porter) as witness. In 1808, John Pain sold his Lick Creek land with Lawrence Porter as witness. (Collison Porter also lived in the area.)
During the time John was in Rowan, NC (and later for one, Noah,) many young Payne males born in the 1780's and early 1790's in MD married girls from the Lick Creek area. Many of these young Payne males moved to Smith, TN about the same time as John and many, later, moved to MO with some to Boone County and are listed on 1820's Boone, MO Tax rolls with John, Sr.
I think it is more than likely that these male Payne's-- Nehemiah, (m. Hannah Daley), Collison (m.Anna Briggs, James (m. Temperance Taylor), John, Jr. (m. Rhoda Briggs), Lawrence (m. Mary Scrivner) and Noah (m. Elizabeth Elston) are six of the possible eight sons of John Payne and Elizabeth Porter. There are other connections among these Payne males. Collison was bondsman for James, John Pain was bondsman for Lawrence, John, Jr. named a son, Collison, and my g grandfather, James Payne's, first wife, Lois Elston, was a sister to Noah's wife.
I have had a DNA test which placed me in Lineage 1b.This line is descended from Thomas Payne/Jane Smallpiece and includes Isaac Payne and Sarah Daulton in the line. I think it would be interesting if a male descendant of Lawrence (or any of the other possible sons of John and Elizabeth) would have DNA test to compare with mine.Another descendant of James Payne also had a 46-marker test. There was only a one marker difference which corresponds with the expected genetic mutations over time.
