A few years late in following up, but hope this may help others in their ancestor search. Most of the Payne's in Chariton, MO in the 1830's, 1840's and 1850's were descendants of John Payne, Sr., w. Elizabeth Porter, who married 6 Jul 1778 in Caroline, MD.They had eight sons in their marriage and moved from MD to Rowan, NC to Smith, TN and finally to MO.The last record of John Payne, Sr. is in the 1821 Tax Rolls for Boone County, MO.
Five of their sons--Nehemiah, James, John, Jr., Noah and William--also came from Smith, TN to MO about 1820. A number of the Payne's in Chariton County were sons of Nehemiah, John, Jr. and James. Some of the Chariton Payne's later moved to SW Oregon.
Some Payne family members had inter-married with Scrivner family members.A number of Scrivner relatives also lived in Chariton County.
This family was not related to the Nehemiah Payne who died in Hall, GA in 1841 according to DNA on descendants of both families.
