Re: Benson Pearson family (1870-1880) Jefferson & Monroe Co., IA
Angela; Here is what my mother has:Minerva Walkup was born (1854) in Liberty Township, Jefferson County, Iowa to David & Elizabeth (Brewer) Walkup. In (1856) when Minerva's mother passed away, her father David Walkup placed all seven (7) of his children in different homes.
Initially Minerva Walkup was with the Catharine Harris family @ Liberty, Jefferson County, Iowa. (this according to the Iowa 1856 census).
In the 1870 census for Jefferson County, Iowa it shows Minerva Walkup as being 15 years old and living with the Benson Pearson family. That census lists the following:Benson Pearson (age 39); Jane (47); Aaron (15); John (14); Elizabeth (13); Nancy (11); Sarah (9); Leroy (8); William (7); Minerva Walkup (15); J S Sullivan (37); Ann Sullivan (29).
In the 1910 federal census it shows in Omaha, Nebraska an Arthur A. Lowrie (age 34).Along with his wife and children it lists a Minerva Lowrie (age 51).
I should say right here that we have seen the last name spelled: Lowry; Lowery; Lowrey & Lowrie.I think it a lot of the time is just how the person writing down the census records thought it sounded.
In the 1915, Iowa state census it shows in Logan, Harrison County, Iowa a Minerva Lowery being widowed. It shows her parents both being from Pennsylvania which is correct.
We have a death certificate for the above Arthur A. Lowrie that states he was born (September 05, 1875) in Iowa. His death was August 07, 1962 in Los Angeles, CA. It lists the name of his father as: Allen Lowrie; and his mother as Minerva Lowrie. The one odd thing is it shows his father as being born in Georgia but the information in all likelihood was provided by his daughter and she sure could have been WRONG on the state as she did not know what state Minerva was born in.
My mother has done all of her research the past 25 (+) years with pen, paper and a truckload of stamps. In otherwords the old fashioned way.
Years back she thought the 1st name of Minerva's husband might be (Thomas) Lowrey; but could never prove that out.The spelling of (Lowrey) was from paperwork when Minerva's father David Walkup passed away. But, since he gave Minerva away when she was (2) years old the spelling might just have been the way it sounded ?
The only other information mom has is in a probate box #34 in Fairfield County, Iowa it has a Joseph Lowery that passed away in (1864).Mom never knew if this might have been a relative or not.
Thus, you have all of the information my mother has.I sure hope you might be able to help her finish up her 25 (+) year quest to solve the mystery of her great aunt Minerva.
